Music videos often contain a number of different elements: Performance, Narrative, Thematic, Symbolic.
Performance- In Katy Perry's Roar video she is seen to appear performing in an unusual surrounding, which in this case is a jungle. The video contains many close ups of the artist and there is a particular visual style that seems to go with the artist which is her clothing. Katy is the figure of an erotic gaze, an object of male desire which is a voyeuristic gaze.
Narrative- The video tells a story that is featured in the lyrics or is suggested by the lyrics. In this music video binary opposites are used to show the day vs the night. Also Todorov's narrative theory is shown in this music video as, at the beginning there is a clear equilibrium which clearly sets the scene with both male and female being in the frame, a disruption then occurs when the tiger comes on screen sweeping the male of his feet. Due to he video being 4 minutes 29 seconds, the narrative is very fast paced with lots of shots and cuts. This video mimics Disney's Tarzan movie, with Katy being Tarzan and Jane.
Symbolic- There is a use of many images in this music video and the images are used to support the lyrics.

There are a lot of close ups of the artist(s) which represents their particular visual style, in this case grime/rap, so their clothing and actions represent that kind of "hood" style. The video is 4 minutes 25 seconds which is just out of the 3-4 minute structure. They seem as though they are in a real life situations which helps them to relate to the demographic

A lot of shots and cuts are used, which are very fast paced to build up the meaning.The images and lyrics relate to the songs in order to hold peoples attention better. Indie genre conventions are usually set in an easily accessed area due to the working class culture. The video is 3 minutes 28 seconds so it sticks within the typical range of 3-4 minutes.
